San Francisco Zoo

After the bridge, we swung by Auntie Gina's house and decided to go to the San Francisco Zoo!  It had been years since we had been through the zoo so this was going to be lots of fun!  With her SF Resident discount, this was going to be a cheap but fun day!

The kids absolutely loved seeing all of the animals.  I have to say the highlights were watching the gorillas run around and listening to Emily talk incessantly about the gorilla's butt.  Why are there two bare spots back there?  Do monkeys like to have their butts like that?  I will save you the torture of having to listen these questions over and over and over.  There were seriously soooo many more.

Emily LOVED seeing the flamingos.  Flamingos are by far Emily's favorite creature in the world.  She dreams of flamingos.  She wants them to be in her backyard.  She just can't get enough of them.  Gina secretly snuck into the gift shop and bought Emily a little plastic flamingo.  She convinced Emily that the flamingos at the zoo must have put the sweet little flamingo in Emily's purse.  Emily believed Gina and quickly named her new flamingo . . . wait for it . . . Flamingo Joseph.  Sounds fitting, doesn't it?

The kids loved the giraffes, hippos, elephants, monkeys, and thought it was so cool that peacocks were just wandering the property.  We had a yummy lunch, even got them cotton candy (Michael got chocolate), and enjoyed the bizarre February sunshine that had us all peeling all of the layers of clothing off that we could!

The best part of the day for me was going into the house of creepy crawly creatures.  I am not a fan of looking at hairy spiders, but I can stomach it for sure.  My sister Gina, however, CAN NOT.  She made it in the door and then started shriveling up and had to leave.  I don't blame her.  Her fear of spiders is real!!!

What a beautiful day to tour the zoo.  We had such a nice time and were so lucky to bring Gina down to San Jose with us to spend the night.  She is flying up tomorrow to visit my Nana and check in on her.  Amidst all of the sadness that comes with Nana being sick- I'm grateful for the chance to be with Gina today.

Golden Gate Bridge

On our way home from San Rafael, we decided to stop and do a little tourist visit to the Golden Gate Bridge.  We parked on the far said of the bridge and decided to hike to the top of a mountain to get a bird's eye view of the city!  While there were panicked moments where the kids thought they were going to fall into the Bay (the view and vantage point were extremely steep)- it was spectacular.  I am so happy we stopped and got to take these great pictures.

Mission San Rafael

All 4th graders in the State of California have to do a project on one of the twenty-one Missions.  Last year, Michael had to research and tour Mission Carmel which turned out to be a great time for me and the kids.  We loved the mission, frolicked in the ocean afterward, and then discovered a restaurant called Phat Burger that the kids think is the greatest burger joint ever!

Claire was given Mission San Rafael this year which was new and exciting.  We drive through San Rafael all the time on our way up to visit Damien's parents in Healdsburg but we haven't toured the city.  The kids didn't have school today, so I thought it would be a great idea to get  in the car, take the 1 hour drive north to San Rafael, and have some fun!

The Mission San Rafael was really neat.  It turns out though, that most of the actual mission isn't there any more!  Mostly just some cool artifacts in the Mission Museum but the newer Mission structures were absolutely beautiful.  All the kids loved the visit and Claire certainly got enough pictures and brochures to help her with her project.

My Valentine Just Knows.

I am sad.  Down in the dumps.  Crushed that my Nana is so sick and that my family had to fly back to Washington after a measly few hours here.  I keep trying to get some pep in my step but I just feel sad.  Ugh.  Today is Valentine's Day.  Damien and I don't give each other gifts on this day of love- but we do usually go out to dinner.  Our plans completely changed so we didn't have anyone to watch the  kids.  Bah Hambug.  (Christmas reference?  Yes.  I get it- wrong season.)

I was wandering around the house in a zip-up sweatshirt and yoga pants (which my kids have aptly named, 'my uniform') when Damien told me to watch a video on my phone.  No sooner did my eyes focus in on the vision of Damien wearing aviators but I immediately recognized the theme of Mission Impossible playing in the background.

Screech!!!  Back in college, sophomore year in fact, Damien planned an entire date focused around the movie Mission Impossible.  I was given a little voice recorder and inserted little tapes in to get my next clue.  First, I had to go to the campus bakery and say a certain phrase to the girl working there to get my next clue.  Then to the mail room.  Then to the Mission Church on campus.  Then to a neighborhood hangout.  Then to a burrito restaurant.  Then to Safeway where he had hid the last tape in a box of Grapenuts cereal.  And finally, the date led me to center court at Leavey Center where Damien and I played basketball and followed it up with luke warm burritos.  It was awesome.  I'll never forget it.  After that date, I knew he was a keeper!

Back to the story.  I took my iPhone and pressed a button.  I saw Damien and heard that familiar movie theme song.  I am so lucky.  He knew I was sad and jumped right into action to save the day!  He downloaded an app on my phone where all you do is focus your screen on a particular image (Damien programmed which image to focus on) and a new video message started to play.  Damien said, "Well, hello Miss Sacco.  It seems as though a lot has changed since your last mission, including your last name.  So congratulations on your new alias and I hope you are up to this mission.  Your mission if you choose to accept it, is to go to the corner of Willow and Meridian.  There, you will find Starbucks Coffee.  Go inside and order a grande drip coffee.  Nothing more.  Await your next instruction.  Good luck!"  I drank my coffee and when I was done, I scanned my coffee cup and got my next clue.

"Congratulations Agent Sacco, ahem, Agent Swendsen.  You made it to the next check point.  Now, to find  your next check point, you are going to have to travel to the first place you brought Double Agent Michael after his mission was complete in France.  Good luck."  I knew I had to go to O'Connor Hospital.  This was where we first went after we landed in SFO with our little 4 pound Frenchman.  We followed an ambulance which brought Michael straight to O'Connor.  Tonight, I was a bit anxious on the short drive over there.  Memories flooded back and I wasn't sure what was in store for me!  I pulled up to the hospital and couldn't find a clue.  So, I texted Damien and he told me to go to the exact place we pulled into many years ago.  I knew just where Damien wanted me to go and as I turned the corner to the place where the ambulance pulled in over 11 years ago, the wind was taken from my chest and tears flooded my eyes.  Right where we were, what seemed like a lifetime ago, was my beautiful, big, healthy Michael.  He stood there all by himself and had the biggest smile on his face.  "Hi, Mom!", he said.  I gave him the most amazing hug and sobbed.  When we were done hugging, he asked me, "Why are you crying?  I thought seeing me was supposed to make you feel happy?"  "Oh, Michael.  I am soooo happy.  But seeing you standing there took my breath away.  The last time I was in this spot, I greeted the NICU doctors and prayed that they could help me with my sick baby.  And there you stood, today.  So perfect, so big, so healthy." I said.  "Oh, I get it.  This brings hard things back to your mind," he guiltily said.  "They were hard times but now they represent such good times.  You represent so much good," I blubbered.  Then Michael handed me a Valentine's Card he had made.  Of course, I cried while reading it.  Then Michael told me to focus the app on the front of his card and there was another video from Damien.  More crying from yours truly.

"Congratulations Agent Swendsen.  You successfully picked up Double Agent Michael.  Congratulations.  For your next check point, you must pick up Double Agent Claire.  Now, as we all know Double Agent Claire had her first mission in Seattle.  Seattle has now become a big rivalry to those of us in the Bay Area.  So, we want you to go to where you had a lot of rivalries in the Bay Area- where you were playing some of your best games . . . to go pick up Double Agent Claire.  Good Luck."  I knew Damien was wanting me to go to Santa Clara University.  With Michael in the car, we drove our way to the campus which is not only the place I fell in love with Damien, but where I reached my dream of playing basketball at the college level.  I pulled into the parking lot of the Leavey Center and in the distance I saw my girl.  As I got closer, I could see more clearly my Clairey (wearing her Seattle Sounders soccer jersey) on the steps leading up to the gym.  Again, the tears flowed.  She ran up to me and gave me the biggest hug.  Then she started crying, too.  You know . . . there is no reason to even find a purpose for these kind of tears.  They are just part of loving someone so much.  I am so blessed to know this love and feel it each and every day.  Claire have me a card and told me to scan it for my next clue.  Claire and Michael got back in the car and we listened to the directions Damien gave me.

"Congratulations Agent Swendsen.  You are very close to completing your mission and very close to celebrating.  And what better way to celebrate, than with champagne.  And what comes with champagne?  A cork.  Find the only cork tree in Northern California and you will find your next Double Agent."  Of course, I knew about the cork tree on Santa Clara University's campus.  I couldn't wait to get over there and see what Double Agent I was picking up next.  As I drove by the Mission Church and took a moment to breathe in the beauty of it all, I saw my beautiful Matthew out of the corner of my eye.  It was certainly dark out by this time and he stood there confidently all alone.  Of course, I knew that Damien was hiding in the vicinity but I didn't want to look for him.  That would take the fun out of it!  Seeing Matthew made my heart feel like it was going to burst.  I truly got to have one very special moment with each of my kids tonight, really getting a chance to be so appreciative to have each one of them.  Matthew told me that I had to switch cars.  Sure enough, I saw the minivan parked a few spots down from me.  So, I moved Matthew's car seat to the van and listened to my next clue.

"Congratulations Agent Swendsen.  There hasn't been a lot of drama in this mission of yours today.  But the next Agent you meet is always full of drama, as you know.  So, you should go to the place where drama happens on a daily basis and where you also had a very romantic dinner theater engagement sixteen years ago with the love of your life.  Good luck."  I knew to go to the theater on campus.  Back in college, Damien rented out the college theater and served me dinner on a candle lit table on the stage.  He even had a waiter, clad in a tuxedo, serve us.  It was nothing short of amazing and it truly blew my twenty-one year old mind!  Back to the story . . . Michael, Claire, Matthew and I walked over to Mayer Theater and at first glance- we didn't see Emily.  The older kids were preoccupied with finding Damien hiding somewhere while I looked for my sweet, dramatic, curly haired girl.  After a few seconds, I turned a corner and there was my Emily looking so proud of herself that she was able to stand alone and wait for Mommy.  She ran to me and gave me the best hug . . . and the last clue.

"Congratulations Agent Swendsen.  You picked up all the Double Agents.  Now, let's take it back to where this all began before an aMAZE-ing party and life together.  I think the Double Agents are getting hungry and we can all go and get Stuffed."  My first unofficial date with Damien was to his fraternity's Maze Party.  That night, we went to Stuft Pizza and hung out with Mark and Jocelyn (they were just dating) and a few of Damien's other friends.  Based on the clues he game me, I knew I had to take my kids over to Stuft Pizza to find Damien.  Sure enough, as the five of us pulled into the parking lot, I could see Damien sitting in a booth.  I kept thinking, This is where it all began.  The significance was not lost on me.  We all walked in and there was my guy.  The guy that knew that my Valentine's Day was not going to be a happy one.  My guy who knew the heartache I felt that my Nana was sick and that my parents needed to leave.  My guy who knows me so well and was able to create this amazing date last minute for me to warm my heart and brighten my spirit.

The six of us shared an amazing, yet simple dinner at the pizza place and the kids loved hearing stories of how Daddy and Mommy met.  They loved feeling a part of 'Our Story'.  Just when I thought the night couldn't get any sweeter, we went out for ice cream after pizza.  The night was nothing short of perfect.  I am such a lucky woman to have these four beautiful children and a husband/best friend who knows what I need without having to ask.  Happy Valentine's Day to everyone out there and to my one and only Valentine . . . thank you.  I love you so very much.

Valentine's Day

Today is Valentine's Day!  While the circumstances are quite different than we had thought, we are all still feeling the L.O.V.E.  Love everywhere for all of those in our hearts.

Nonna and Grandpa gave the kids some Valentine treats before they left and they all put on their fun new shirts I got them!  Today is all about love.  Our entire family equals love to us.  We are grateful, we are in love with our life, we feel the love from those who surround us.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Grandparent's Day

This has been a truly emotional day.  This morning was Grandparents Day and while it was beautiful, I expected things to go a little differently.  My parents and Laura flew in from Kirkland yesterday.  Not only is this Grandparent's Day at school, it was also going to be a celebratory Anniversary weekend in San Francisco for my parents.

Yesterday, after only being in town for a few hours- my Mom got a call from home that her Mother, my beloved Nana, was very ill.  After a few minutes of getting over the shock of the sad news and knowing that this fully planned weekend was not going to be . . . my parents and Laura booked a flight home for first thing the next morning.

And that brings us to this very moment.  My kids were very blessed that Damien's parents were able to be with them today at school.  They were able to visit all of the kids' classrooms and we got to share a lovely lunch with them.  On the other hand, my kids were also very sad to wake up this morning and learn of the sad news that Nonna and Grandpa wouldn't be able to make it to Grandparent's Day.  They were also very sad to learn that Nana was very sick.  They understood that my parents and Laura had to go home.  They just had a hard time dealing with the quick nature of it all.

I found the whole day very ironic that my own Grandparent, on Grandparent's Day, was very sick.  On a day like today where we think of our loved ones, my heart was with my Nana and my prayers were with my Mom that she would be able to make it back in time to see her Mommy.

While we missed my parents tremendously at the kids' school, we were so happy that they made it back to be with Nana.  The next few days are going to be really difficult.  Being away from home- I kind of feel like I am stuck waiting for a sign that it is time for me to fly home and be with my Nana, too.  To say goodbye.  Until I get that feeling, I am going to wait here and think of my Nana constantly.

Girls, Girls, Girls

Damien was driving with Matthew to Michael's basketball game.  Damien stopped the car at a light and there happened to be two cute girls running who had to stop at the light before crossing.   The two girls were really close to the car and Matthew's window.

Matthew:  Dad, what are you looking at?

Damien:  Um...some of the cars going by. Why, what are you looking at? (knowing Matthew noticed the two cute girls)

Matthew: Um...I'm looking at the houses.

Damien:  I also saw those two girls running.

Matthew:  Well, we finally have something in common. (That is a direct quote.)

Damien:  (trying to stifle my laughter) So you were looking at those girls?

Matthew: (laughing) Yeah!

Golden Circle- Huey Lewis

Once again, we were treated by our good friends Phil and Karrie Grasser to a wonderful evening benefiting Santa Clara University.  The Golden Circle Theater Party this year featured Huey Lewis and the News.  They were awesome!  It is always fun to live in a super dressed up world for the night.  I was able to get my hair and make up done and spend the night with my amazing hubby at the Fairmont Hotel.  It was so wonderful and a great and much needed break for the two of us.  We danced the night away and had so much fun.  We are so blessed to have these opportunities to get away for a bit and reconnect.

Matthew's Buddies

Matthew is having a great time with some new buddies in Kindergarten.  Every Wednesday, there are four Moms who switch off having a playdate after school.  They look forward to it every week.  I am loving seeing Matthew so happy in school.  He sure has some great friends.  From left to right:  TJ, Jacob, Matthew and Joey.

Matthew's 100th Day of School!

Today was Matthew's 100th day of school!  He brought 100 Legos and had a great day!

A Two Tooth Night!

Since it was only three nights ago that we were dealing with the kids and their sucky flu, I decided to make some homemade chicken noodle soup for dinner.  After soaking up the last of her broth with some garlic toast, Claire declared at the table that she was going to pull her tooth out all by herself.

She tried and she tried and she tried and she tried.  Finally, she took Damien up on his offer to have him just pull the tooth out!  Being the awesome and natural tooth puller that he is- he got it out no problem!  Emily, who was a little worried during the whole tooth pulling fiasco, was the first to bring Claire a cup of water without having to be asked.  Such a sweet little sister moment.

Claire got tons of hoorays and yahoos and then the attention turned to Matthew.  Matthew's lower middle left tooth is hanging by a thread and since we were on the topic of tooth pulling, we might as well have a two tooth night!

Matthew took his seat on Damien's lap and within seconds- he, too had lost a tooth!  It was funny because when Damien yanked it out, it fell down Matthew's shirt!  Emily once again got her tooth-losing sibling a glass of water and marveled at her big siblings ability to be so brave!

The tooth fairy has a big job to do tonight at the Swendsen household!  Two cool kids, two teeth lost!  Oh, what a night!

49ers in the Superbowl!

Wait, I think I misunderstood what you said.  You said, Superbowl, right?  Because I swear, we are in the Sucky-Bowl.  Serious suckiness.  This morning, we had to cancel our Superbowl party.  Why?  Because Michael came down with the stomach flu the morning of the BIG game.  For a play by play explanation- Claire handed off the stomach bug to Michael and he might . . . go . . . all . . . the . . . way!  Not to the end zone for a touchdown, but to the toilet.

So what if I had already purchased and prepared food that could feed a small army.  So what if I had bought all the kids cute shirts to show their 49er pride.  So what if Damien has been waiting for this day since 1994.  We had no say in the matter.  We were surrounded by Superbowl sickness.

During the pregame show, Matthew and Emily fell asleep on the couch.  That was not like them at all!  They weren't up late the night before so I was confused by this sudden sleepiness.  That was until they both woke up right after kickoff, completely pale, and told us that they needed to throw up!

And as awesome as having three sick kids during the Superbowl was, watching the 49ers get buried by the Baltimore Ravens was even worse.  Such high hopes.  So much anticipation.  From the kickoff, we were beat.  It really just went downhill from there.

In an odd fashion, the lights at the Superbowl literally went out.  I mean it when I say there was a power outage at New Orleans Superdome!  It was only after the 34 minute delay that the 49ers even looked like themselves!  They did the best they could but eventually succumbed to the Ravens 34-31.  It was sad and our house was beyond depressing.  In fact, I am not sure what was more depressing.  Helping my three sick kids barf every fifteen minutes or seeing Damien on the couch completely expressionless and unable to move.  We were all disappointed with the loss but he was ruined.

Life goes on and there are certainly more seasons of football ahead.  It's just hard when your team gets to a so close to a Superbowl Championship, or when Emily gets so close to getting her barf in the toilet.  It just stinks to be disappointed to have to clean up your Superbowl dreams with Clorox wipes.

Thank you San Francisco for an amazing season.  We had so many good times and great memories this season.  I know we will all try to get over this Superbowl loss but I have to be honest- this is a going to take a while.  And by taking a while, I mean trying to eat all of the food I purchased that we served to no one . . . but Claire who was the only kid feeling great!
