Emily's 2nd Birthday Party- San Jose

Emily has been looking forward to her birthday party for months now!  In order for her to be more motivated for potty training, sleeping, behaving well- we have been talking about how cool it is to turn two!  That once she turns two, she is a BIG GIRL!  I knew I wanted to have the party at home and make it really special for her.  I can remember each of my children's second birthdays really well.  Michael had a big party at E and Papa's (Winnie the Pooh Theme) and a party at Nonna and Grandpa's (Elmo theme), Claire had a ladybug theme here in San Jose and then a 50's style Poodle party at Nonna and Grandpa's, and Matthew . . . well we went to Chuck E. Cheese in San Jose.  Yes, sad but true.  I was very pregnant with Emily at the time and unable to travel or do much of anything.  I felt terrible but what was I going to do?  (Matthew, if you are reading this years from now, I love you buddy!  Sorry about slighting you on your second birthday.  Please note that I kept this in mind when I went overboard throwing your awesome Peter Pan birthday when you turned four.  Thanks, Mommy.)

I racked my brain for the perfect party theme and nothing seemed to feel right!  When I sent the invitation, I had written Sweet Emily is Turning Two!  That was it!  She is sweet so why not have a sweet themed birthday?  We planned to celebrate her birthday on June 11th because the following day Auntie Ali was graduating from UC Santa Cruz undergrad.

Claire was equally as excited to help me be creative and together, we came up with a lot of fun decorations for the party!  The first thing we wanted to do was to make a number two on a foam core board and then fill it with candy.  While at Target, Claire and I were perusing the candy aisle and the Starbursts were on sale.  Without completely thinking it through- we bought them because they have a lot of surface area and would fill up the two quickly!  It wasn't until later that night after we had lined the perimeter of the two with licorice that we realized that a square candy was the LAST thing  we should have bought for this project.  The number two is verys curvy so if we were going to make this look good, we were going to have to cut A LOT of Starbursts.  Claire was in charge of making sure the color scheme was right and laid our properly.  I was in charge of cutting and gluing.  In the end, we were thrilled with our 'masterpiece' but my throbbing finger from cutting the Starbursts didn't see it the same way!

Next thing to do was find Emily a party dress.  I wanted her to be in something with pink in it that looked fun!  Would you know that Emily found the dress before I could see it!  She wandered over and saw the pink diamonds on this dress and I couldn't believe it!  She found it!  Check!

We kept the party pretty small.  Just close friends and our family.  I guess the word small doesn't apply to either of our families.  Both Damien and my families are huge so we know that 'small' to us means huge to others!  In the end we had 38 people and it felt just right.

Lots of lollipops, candy, cupcakes, cake, licorice, sugar sticks, and a candy packed cupcake pinata surrounded my sweet girl on her special day.  She didn't know what do to first?  Should she devour a lollipop as big as her face?  Should she bounce around in her bounce house with her cousins, siblings and friends?  Should she pout because she didn't get the nap she usually gets?  All of the above?

The day was wonderful and the party was just the celebration I wanted for my little two year old sweetheart!  Emily really had a wonderful day.  One of the things that I loved was that all party long, she tried to hold up two fingers but her other fingers kept getting in the way.  When you would ask her how old she was, she would look intently at her hand and try and make 'two'.  It usually ended up looking like four and a half!

Emily got a lot of great gifts.  She got some really cute clothes, some fun toys, pajamas and she also got a Jesse hat and Jesse boots!  Emily was beside herself with all of the Jesse gear.  She started with some yodel-eye-hee-whos automatically.  I absolutely loved it.  It is just what she wanted.  So cute.

She was surrounded by love and by the look on her face when we all sang her Happy Birthday, she felt the love, too.  I would like to make sure that I document one thing that cracked me up on her birthday.  After we finished the Happy Birthday song, Emily said cha cha cha which sent everyone into hysterics.  This is the sense of humor I am talking about.  She is seriously too much!

Emily Turns Two!!!

My baby is two!  I am still in shock.  I remember when Emily was little thinking that somehow, someway- I would get her to be two years old.  Surely, if I could just get her to be two, this 'mother of four' bit would be a breeze.  Um, yeah.  That was a silly little dream.  Sure- things are a lot easier in a lot of ways, but life is still bustling along and I am doing everything in my power to just keep our lives moving in the right direction!

Emily is so ridiculously funny.  I have never seen a two year old with such a sense of humor.  She just gets everything!  She is always listening to things going on around her.  If I tell Claire to go to the garage to get a new box of cereal, she is already at the door by the time Claire can even turn around.  I have to be super careful with what I say around my beautifully aware little girl!  Sometimes she will respond, "What.  Seriously?" when I ask her a question.  Um, seems a little advanced to me!  Two going on ten!  She has a few different laughs.  One laugh she does is so guttural and hilarious!  We call it the crazy laugh.  She only does it when you tickle her or when she is trying to get laughs from people in the room.  She loves attention and isn't afraid to do what it takes to get it!

I have a hard time describing Emily.  People always ask, 'What is she like?'  I think it's appropriate to first say that Emily is the biggest love.  She gives me more love than I could ever dream of!  She loves to hug and kiss me and all of her family members and is so sensitive to anyone in need.  If I am holding her and Damien walks in the room, she will say 'just three of us' and she will hug us both and sing a song.  She hates when anyone gets hurt and is one of the first people there to help out!  Emily loves me so much and is always aware of where I am.  God forbid I leave the room without her knowing.  When she realizes I am gone, she will let out a scream 'Mom?'.  Mommy's Girl, for sure!

The reason it is hard to describe her is because as much as she is loving, she is equally intense.  She thinks she is ten years old and fights like it.  Poor Matthew bears the brunt of it, too.  She is just in a part of her life where she can't help herself!  I do see lots of improvement so I am hoping she can turn a corner and get more control of her actions.  She is only two, you know!  I think that once she is truly threatened by a time out or a punishment, she will get better!

Emily is talking a lot now.  She is able, for the most part, to say everything she needs to say to communicate.  Most words that come out of her mouth are expected.  Some of the things that she says that blow me away are:  hot tub, dangit, diet (as in, 'i have some diet coke?), hum ere (come here), hold you (hold me), iPhone and iPad are in her frequent word list, what you eating?, have lotion?, oh my gosh, have lip gloss?, have coffee?, i told (i'm scared), Mom, you're the best, dee-doo (a secret word game with Michael), i go Costco?, and the ever sarcastic ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.?  What I am trying to point out here is that Emily doesn't talk about the things I imagine other two year olds talking about.  Her vocabulary includes words that come out of her siblings mouths.  While hysterical at times, it is also scary!

Emily's hair is heavenly.  Seriously, it is just the cutest thing ever!  Claire's hair was curly, but not this curly.  If I don't put Emily's hair in a clip or a ponytail, she looks wild!  I usually can tell how my day went by looking at Emily's hair at the end of the day.  If my day was crazy, her hair looks crazy.  If I kept things in check, she looks so cute!  It is hilarious.  I don't think her hair has really dropped much on her back in the last six months.  It just gets curlier and curlier in these precious little ringlets.  She is a big healthy 36 1/2 pounds and 38 inches tall.  This measured over 110% percent.  It is just crazy.  She is officially my biggest kiddo, yet!  The doctor said she is the size of an average three year old.  Holy smokes!  So much for Emily feeling like the baby!

What else can I say about this girlie.  She is strong, fierce, loving, independent, and totally dependant at the same time.  She still sleeps in bed with me at night (gulp).  I know sleep training is coming soon.  It is just so hard!  She is really determined to do and get what she wants so I know this training is going to be rough.  One thing she does to calm herself down is to play with my ears, or anyone who will lend her an ear.  Bizarre?  A little.  But it is what she does to de-stress.  If anyone knows where I can get a little plush ear to let her sleep with in her crib, let me know :) !

Emily loves her baby who she named Baby Gina.  She loves to play with Claire's Littlest Pet Shops, loves being with Mommy nonstop, loves running around and jumping off things, loves climbing on the counter and breaking rules, insists on taking out the recycling, getting her own water from the refrigerator, eating popsicles, loves playing hide and seek and yelling yodel-ey-hee-whooooo, loves swimming and anything to do with water, she loves to run errands and see new things, she prefers to be as God made her- naked, she loves dogs, cats, and bugs (although she will stand over a bug and say I step?), she loves to try any and all foods, loves to disrupt whatever her siblings are doing, and just loves when people are around!

She does not like flying in airplanes (although she is good, take off and touch down scare her), she does not like Ursula the Evil SeaWitch from The Little Mermaid, she doesn't like it at all when Mommy leaves, she doesn't like it when you snap her carseat seatbelt (Emmy do it!), she is not a huge fan of car rides and is not a good car sleeper, and above all- Emily does not like to feel like she is missing out on ANYTHING!!!

My Emily is amazing.  She is so dynamic, hilarious, and incredible.  While she can be trying at times, she is worth all the struggle and more.  She melted our hearts the other night during dinner at prayer.  After two years of listening to prayers- she finally said her own.  "God Bless Mommy, Daddy, Michael, Claire, Matthew and Em-ul-ay."  God Bless you Emily and congratulations on your second birthday.  We all love you so, so much.

Michael's 3rd Grade Time Capsule

Michael's third grade teacher, Mrs. Delgadillo, came up with a great little keepsake for her students.  At the beginning of the year, she had them make a time capsule about themselves.  All it required was answering a series of questions on a piece of paper that she gave them.  At the end of the year, she handed them a duplicate page to fill out.  This way- the kids could see how they changed over the course of a full school year!  Michael never told me that he had filled this out at the beginning of the year (not a shocker- I hear very little about class activities) so when he brought it home- it gave me a good giggle!

Because I know my Michael, I can tell that he was a more confident kid at the end of the year.  A new school year brings on some challenges that are obviously overcome by the end of the year.  I can tell by some of Michael's answers that he mastered the third grade and felt pretty darn good about himself . . . as he should.  He is one amazing kiddo!

Claire's Penpal

The school year is rapidly winding down.  Claire is loving second grade.  Her teacher, Ms. Alongi, has really inspired Claire to be the very best she can be and it shows when she comes home from school most every single day with a huge smile on her face!  Claire has been writing to a girl from a neighboring Catholic School this entire year.  Her penpal Yasmine, has been sending Claire letters at school detailing her life and telling Claire how much she can't wait to meet her!

I was able to get a hold of one of the letters that Claire wrote to Yasmine and it was too cute not to share.

Dear Yasmine,

I'm so very excited to meet you!  We're going on a field trip to Hidden Villa today.  We get to wear free dress but we have to wear long pants and shirts.  My favorite subject is reading.  Also, my favorite ice cream is pink bubblegum and my favorite color is sky blue.  I was born on September 27, 2002.  I have one sister and two brothers.  I go to St. Christopher School.  I think I am going to be a teacher when I grow up.  Do you have any pets?  One time, I had two fish but they died.

Your Penpal,
Claire Swendsen

Disneyland 2011

What does one do when their calendar is chock-full of activities and commitments?  You leave for Disneyland!  Well, at least we did!  We received an awesome opportunity to accompany my sister-in-law Lani's family to Disneyland and stay in the Grand Californian with them.  Although it sounded fun, we looked at our calendar and didn't think we could make it work.  Earlier in the year when the trip was proposed, we said no because it is the weekend before school gets out and in the past has just been nuts!

But here we were again considering the trip and we decided to throw caution to the wind and head down to the House of Mouse to have a fantastic and magical trip!  We had to opt out of Claire's end of the season soccer party, have Michael miss the end of the year baseball parade, and clear out a few other events before we were in the clear.  Both Michael and Claire were fine with changing their schedules and couldn't wait for the trip.  (Just a note: it rained the whole time in San Jose when we were gone and all games/parties were eventually cancelled.  So glad we went!)

Normally we drive the short six hour drive to Disneyland but considering the timing of the trip, we knew we would have to fly.  We were scheduled to fly out bright and early Saturday morning and then fly back on Monday night.  We couldn't keep the kids out of school another day because then they would have to miss some really fun days with their friends.  They were very clear about not wanting to miss school more than Monday.  Damien and I both wanted to be sensitive to this and made sure they wouldn't have to.

We woke up at 6:30 on Saturday morning and I had the kids put on their Disney outfits and be ready to head to the airport.  It was an early start but everyone fared pretty well!  The airport was a breeze and the kids were just overflowing with excitement!  I loved seeing them all sitting together eating their morning goodies while waiting for the flight.  They are the best!

We made it to the Grand Californian with no hiccups at all!  Check in was a breeze and we were extra delighted to see that Emily got a few little gifts from the hotel because it was her birthday!  She got a signed picture of the princesses and then a Happy Birthday button which earned her about 100 birthday wishes from cast members in the park.  She loved it!  Before we knew it- we were in the park!  It was awesome!  Lani and her family were driving and were about three hours behind us so we hopped into California Adventure for some fun!

Because we stayed at the Grand Californian, we had fast passes to the brand new ride Ariel's Undersea Adventure!  It was the rides first day in operation so everyone was flocking to it.  The line was ridiculous but lucky for us- we had a ticket which brought us right to the front of the ride.  The ride was really cute.  Emily absolutely loved it but she was afraid of Ursula.

We went on a few more rides while waiting for the rest of our family to show up and when they did- we were so happy to see them!  Between our two families and Heather, we had a group of twelve people! That's five adults and seven children.  This should be interesting!  We had a wonderful day in the park and had lunch at a restaurant that gave us fast passes to the night showing of Disney's World of Color.  Okay, here is where I rant about this experience.  I have heard a lot about this new show in California Adventure and I really expected a lot from it.  Hmmm.  It's not that good.  If you have seen Fantasmic before, this show has nothing on it.  It is way too long and didn't have much to offer that Fantasmic doesn't.  I only complain because World of Color is hard to see and you have to either get fast passes to get a good look or wait forever.  I just think that it isn't worth the hype.  Glad that is off my chest!

The kids did love the first fifteen minutes of it.  The only hard part was even though we had fast passes which got us in the first few rows, we still had to hold all the kids on our shoulders so they could see!  Kids get heavy really fast and on top of that- all the kids were absolutely exhausted!!!  I had Emily on my shoulders and noticed that she was starting to flinch so I took her down and held her high while resting her face on my face.  Then I realized that she seemed really heavy and not awake.  I asked Damien, 'Is she sleeping?' and he just started cracking up.  So tired you fall asleep while vertical?  Yep, that sounds like Disneyland alright!

The next day, we spent primarily in Disneyland and hit all of the attractions!  Emily and Matthew were beside themselves.  I love the feeling I get in Disneyland and clearly- they loved it, too!  The loved trying to pull out the sword from the stone, Emily braved it through Pirates of the Caribbean while chanting fate (fake), Claire and Matthew got brave and went on Space Mountain for the first time, Michael thought the piranha on the Jungle Cruise were real, we saw an amazing firework show at night while Michael and Matthew danced beneath it's bright lights (note: Michael asked us over and over while dancing if he was going to fall into the sky???), Baby Mine (which is Claire and my song) played as the fireworks danced in the sky and as the bright lights flashed off Clairey's cheek- I saw a tear run down her face (absolutely precious), and lastly we took in an awesome parade where all the princesses and main Disney characters participated!  The kids were in all of their glory and it was awesome to witness it.

One of the highlights for us (and low points for Matthew) was seeing if Matthew was tall enough to go on Indiana Jones.  We didn't think he was tall enough but he sure thought he would be.  You can't even imagine his disappointment when we sized him up and realized he couldn't go.  He bawled, and bawled, and bawled.  My heart ached for him.  He knew Michael and Claire could go and he didn't realize why he couldn't!  Poor baby.  While the big kids were on the ride- I took him next door and bought him an Indiana Jones action figure.  Usually, that is not my style.  But I had to get him something.  He was absolutely crushed.  Somehow- that little figure made it all better.

For lunch that afternoon, we went to Ariel's Grotto.  Problem for us- when it was time for our reservation, both Emily and Matthew were sound asleep.  ASLEEP!  I mean the kind of sleep when you try and wake them up and you just can't!  Damien carried Matthew down and I tried to wheel Emily downstairs but they both woke up!  Lucky for us, we were able to get their picture with Ariel despite half asleep looks!

During our lunch, Ariel, Belle, Snow White, Aurora, and Cinderella came around to take pictures.  Claire loved it but Emily was absolutely beside herself!  Although Emily was so tired, she managed to pull it together!  Even Michael jumped up from his seat at lunch to get a picture with Cinderella!  While we were eating, I saw Jesse (from Toy Story) across the way.  Damien immediately grabbed Emily and Matthew and headed across the water to see her!  I loved that he did this without hesitation.

Everyone knows that Emily LOVES Jesse!  Up to this point, Emily had been pretty scared of the characters.  After Damien had waited in the line for over twenty minutes- it was their time!  Emily was comfortable but also a little bit scared.  How perfect!  Matthew was glad that he could take some pictures with one of the Army Guys from the movie. too.  It was the best.  I think Emily could have gone home at this point.  She loves Jesse so much.  We were going to be at the park for three days and at the end of day two, we had done most of what we came to accomplish!

On the last day, our plan was simple.  Do whatever the kids wanted to do.  One of the main things Claire and Michael wanted to do was go on the ride Tower of Tower.  Michael braved it for the first time on our last trip to Disneyland in 2009 so he was totally ready to go!  Seamus loves this ride so he was super enthusiastic!  Clairey was trying to stay calm.  The goal was to not freak out and have to get out of line.  She did great.  Michael tried to freak her out a bit here and there but I just told her that they wouldn't let people go on the ride if they were not going to come off of the ride in one piece.  After the ride was said and done, Claire loved it and wanted to do it again and again!  Other firsts for her (other than Space Mountain) was Screamin' California!  Again, all of the kids loved it and I think they went on it about six times during our three day stay!

The number one thing on Matthew's list was to participate in Star Wars Jedi Training Academy.  For those that haven't seen it, it is awesome!  I can't imagine anything cooler to a young Star Wars fan than this!  You sit in a small amphitheater and wait for the twenty minute show to begin!  It starts out with a Jedi Trainer walking through the crowd and telling all the kids that some of them will be chosen to train!  We got there early because we wanted Matthew to have a front row seat (hoping it might improve his chances of being chosen).  We asked Michael and Claire to try and get chosen and then asked that if they were chosen and Matthew had not been chosen- that they might forfeit their spot to Matthew.  Claire whole heartedly agreed and Michael answered with, 'I'm not sure I can do that.'  Okay then.  Michael had already done this two times in previous years but he is pretty serious about the honor of being chosen to fight Darth Vader and Darth Maul.

We looked at the boy sitting next to us and saw that he had a hand drawn sign that said, 'Pick me to be your Padawan'.  Oh man.  People brought props!  Maybe the Star Wars Lego t-shirt I dressed him in that morning wouldn't be enough!  I turned to my sister-in-law who had tapped my shoulder and she handed me a pair of Mickey ears to make Matthew look more adorable (which is very hard to do)!  Brilliant.  The Trainer started the show and started walking around to pick the kids.  First picked, the kid with the sign.  Dang it!  I knew I should have done something creative!  Five kids later, Michael gets picked.  He looks over at me and Matthew, pauses a moment, and then runs up to join the training.  Okay.  Now Claire and Matthew were our only chance to get Matthew picked!  I whispered to Matthew to start jumping and waving his arms and then wondered if I looked like one of those pathetic stage Moms who does the routine in the audience while their kid is on stage.  Mental note.  Stop waving your adult arms and let Matthew take care of this!  Wouldn't you know that Matthew got picked!  A collective sigh could be heard from our group of twelve.  We wouldn't have to stay for another show to see if he could get picked then.  He got chosen now!

My Jedis in Training were doing great.  They were taught the moves necessary to fight anyone from the Dark Side.  Suddenly the stage started to rise and smoke was everywhere.  Darth Vader and Darth Maul were here.  Matthew and Michael were both chosen to fight Darth Vader and they looked serious.  Perhaps a little too much so.  When a young padawan fights Darth, there are scripted moves the kids make.  Left shoulder, right shoulder, left leg, right leg, and then your done.  Well, before Darth Vader fought Michael, he said "Join me in the Dark Side, it is the only way."  If I were closer, I could've probably seen the hairs on Michael's neck rise as he was challenged by Darth Vader.  I knew something was going to 'go down'.  Sure enough, Michael went off script and tried to stab Darth Vader through his chest.  NOT ON SCRIPT!  This daring move elicited a comment from the trainer which said, "We're going to aim for his light saber.  Remember that."  I am sure the trainer was thinking, 'Note to self:  Don't pick ten year old red headed boys anymore.'  We were dying in the audience!  In the end, Michael and Matthew successfully defended themselves against the Dark Side and for Matthew and Michael alike, their dream became a reality.

Some of the mentionables that I couldn't possibly expand on are:  Matthew getting DRENCHED to his undies on Splash Mountain, eating more churros, sour balls, Mickey ice cream bars and cream cheese filled pretzels than I could have imagined (yes, they have cream cheese filled pretzels and no they are not on my diet), seeing Michael so ridiculously happy that he got to spend three whole days with his cousin Seamus, watching all the girls pile into Lani's stroller, watching my three older kids zipline in Redwood Creek Challenge Trail in California Adventure, seeing Emily try and overcome her apparent fear of people in costumes with a brave high five (only Jesse got a hug), reminiscing with Damien about the times we used to come here before we had kids, letting the kids pick one prize (Michael and Matthew made their own double light sabers, Claire picked a cute kitty box that held stickers, pencil sharpeners, etc. and Emily chose a Minnie Mouse that spins her skirt when you press a button).  We had the best time in the Happiest Place on Earth.

There is no way to fully capture the magic this trip held for all of us.  Too many funny stories, moments of hysterics, and times where we saw our children truly full of wonder.  This trip was amazing and I can't wait to go back again!
